Sensor Die

The Pyreos thin film pyroelectric technology is very different from other pyroelectric materials and offers a unique capability to design IR sensors of all sizes, big and small, and to tune the sensor performance to match the requirements of your application.

Pyreos design freedom is made possible by the thin-film nature of our IR sensor material and the advanced semiconductor/ MEMs process technology we use to manufacture our products. The thin film-MEMs structure of our sensors allows Pyreos to achieve good signal to noise ratio with both large area sensors and very small area miniaturised sensors, that can be far smaller then traditional pyroelectric IR sensors. The smallest sensors we have made are ~10 x 10 microns in size, whilst the largest are a few centimetres. Other pyrolectric materials lose performance as the sensor size decreases, due to rapidly increasing noise floor. This is not the case with Pyreos, where our unstrained sputtered thin film can be easily patterned into any size of sensor element, and because it is deposited onto a thermally isolating, mechanically strong membrane the noise remains low, and we achieve excellent sensitivity.

Any number of sensor elements can be simply designed into a sensor die for a customer, in a given target die(chip) size, at very little additional cost. There is no real limit to die size, but we generally recommend die sizes from 0.3 cm x 0.3 cm up to 3 x 2 cm as a safe working limit. Small size sensors offer competitive advantage in the field of gas detection and motion detection.

With our technology it is also possible to tune the performance to achieve higher sensitivity, or a specific time constant if required, by adding additional materials and structures to our sensor device.

Our sensor die can be shipped to you as sawn wafers on wafer-tape, in waffle trays or gel-packs. The die themselves are robust, with the ability to withstand high temperature process conditions, making them suitable for surface mount assembly. They can be assembled using standard fully automated assembly processes and equipment.

Why not give us a call to discuss your requirements? We have a substantial number of designs available to sample, including a selection of single element, dual element, and array formats. An example die datasheet is shown here.

We also offer, several times a year, a low cost prototyping service where for €1800 we will manufacture your sensor design for you and provide approximately 10 sample die of your design to you. If required we can also carry out the design and prototype packaging for you, at additional cost. Please contact us if you want to be kept informed about future dates for this prototyping service.
